Nissan Car Key Replacement: What Type of Key Does Your Vehicle Use?
Not all Nissan keys are the same, and getting the right replacement starts with knowing exactly what your vehicle uses. Older Nissan models — certain early Altimas, Frontiers, and Sentras — use a basic cut metal key with no electronics. Moving forward, Nissan introduced transponder keys, which contain a small chip inside the key head that must be programmed to match your vehicle's immobilizer system. Without that programming, a correctly cut key will turn in the ignition but the engine will not start. Many current Nissan models, including popular trims of the Rogue and Maxima, use either a key fob with a separate emergency blade or a fully integrated Intelligent Key (smart key) that allows push-button start and proximity-based locking and unlocking.
Our technicians carry the diagnostic and programming equipment needed to cut and program all of these formats on-site. Whether you drive a Nissan Murano with a push-button smart key or an older Altima with a basic transponder blade, we can produce a working replacement key at your location. We also replace and re-synchronize key fobs that have stopped communicating with your vehicle — a common issue after a battery swap or an accidental reset — without requiring you to visit a dealership.
